What to Do When You Want to Breed Animals, But You Have Garden
When you’re living in the countryside, breeding your animals comes with a lot of benefits. You can either breed them for livestock to harvest eggs, dairy, and meat from them, or you can raise them to become pets. However, there could be some downsides when you breed your animals improperly, such as getting your well-tended garden destroyed.
How Do You Breed Animals?
Before you start breeding animals, you must check with your local municipality first on which animals you are allowed to breed. Municipalities vary; some allow certain animals while some may not, so this is something important to keep in mind.
Once you have done this, make sure you are getting your animals - chicks, hatchlings, bunnies, etc - from a reliable and ethical dealer. Look out for potential scams, and make sure your breeder or dealer is completely reputable. You should also make sure that the baby animals you’ll get for initial breeding are healthy enough and free of any diseases.
Lastly, make sure that you have the proper equipment such as warm incandescent bulbs for baby animals, waterers, feeders, and fences to keep out wildlife. These are incredibly important to make sure your animals grow healthily.
How Do You Breed Animals Despite Having a Garden?
You might think that having a garden could be a liability when breeding animals, but there are many ways to raise your own animals despite having one. Read on to know how to do it:
Choose Low-maintenance Animals.
Low-maintenance animals are easy to handle and are less likely to wreak havoc in your garden. Choose small animals such as rabbits, chickens, ducks, or even honeybees! These animals are often inexpensive and don’t require a lot of space.
Protect Your Animals from Wildlife.
When you raise your animals in your backyard garden, they are vulnerable to several types of wildlife such as deer. Make sure that you install enough equipment such as a fence to give your animals and garden adequate protection from deer, so you can guarantee their safety. A fence can also safeguard your animals from other predators, such as raccoons and bears. Many beginner animal breeders take their animals’ safety for granted, and you should not do the same.
Use Manure as Fertilizer
Do you know that your animals can be assets to your garden? You can utilize their manure as fertilizer to keep your plants healthy. You can put their manure in compost heaps, as their manure speeds up the process of composting.
Make Sure You Provide Enough Shelter.
You have to give them a roof above their heads to protect them from severe weather. You also have to make sure that the shelter you provide is suited to the type of animal you intend to breed. Rabbits, for example, need wire cages. Chickens, on the other hand, need coops where they can roost and lay eggs.
When armed with proper knowledge, raising or breeding animals despite having a garden is not utterly impossible anymore. Just make sure that you get your initial breeding animals from ethical dealers and provide them with enough shelter and equipment. Also, keep them safe from predators! When you do all these steps, you are now more likely to become a responsible and successful animal breeder.
